Lesson 10 Joshua Chapter 10 How God Does Battle
Fear… More than anything FEAR is what keeps us from
everything that God has for us. His purpose, obedience and total love and joy in
our relationships. Even future blessings are adversely affected by our fears.
Future blessings such as ministry opportunities, better circumstances and
children who follow the Lord can evade us because of decisions made in the
shadows of present fears. We fear failure, we fear speaking up, being different,
not liked and acting assertively. All of which keep us stuck in a normal life.
As long as we live in fear, we will not experience victory. The surprising
power of fear as motivation… Read Joshua 10:1-10 According to vs.2 what was the single motivation of the
King of Jerusalem and his people?
Once again the chapter opens with fear in the headlines. A
great fear had seized Adoni-Zedek, king
of Jerusalem. And for good reason… The handwriting was on the wall
(Dan.5). Jerusalem’s security was in serious jeopardy. If Israel’s armies
continued without challenge Jerusalem would soon be wiped out. However, fear
ended up being the very thing that opened the door for Joshua and Israel to take
this area for God and His people. As an opening thought and powerful spiritual principle, we
should take note that fear not only can affect the believer- it affects all
of human kind. Notice the example in Joshua 10; fear among unbelieving people
might very well be used by God to advance His kingdom; while fear among
believers may be used by the evil one to slow or halt the advance of God’s
Kingdom. Read the following verses. How did fear factor into each
verse and does it affect believers or non-believers? John 16:7-11 / 1John 4:18
Luke 5:4-11
In this case fear could have stopped God’s plan for the
advance of His kingdom- but because they made a faith choice the kingdom
advanced. Powerfully! John 12:40
Remember, you are not the only one who is afraid. Everyone
is afraid… You, however, as a believer have the opportunity to make petty fear
take a back seat to the bigger picture; the advance of the kingdom of God. Cool! Seven strange
THINGS God will use to give you victory…
#1- God gives you victory by using bad for good… Sounds like a bunch of armies gathering to destroy the
minority would be a horrific thing; right? I mean how could this not be the
worst possible situation? Not only is Gibeon up against five or six armies, but
Israel has riled up all these kings at once. Previous to this they were knocking
one city off at a time… Now half a dozen have combined forces and Israel will be
forced to fight them all at once. Read Joshua 10:42
What was the result of this “bad situation”?
Remember that Israel’s purpose is to take this land for God
and His people. This goof up could have spelled disaster for God’s purpose. He
however used it for ultimate good. Genesis 50:19-20
What principle do you see here that is present in Joshua 10:1-6
Look again at Genesis 50:19-20
How is “good” defined here?
2 Peter 3:9 / Jude 23 / Heb.10:39 If you really want victory in your life, often the best
thing you can do is allow God to redefine what “good” is in your mind. Romans 8:28
Does this passage add any understanding to the principle that God uses
what was intended for evil to bring about good?
How often do you think that what you saw as a bad thing was
or will be ultimately used for good? When you read the book of Revelation, is
there any doubt about how things end up and who wins (Rev.20:11-15)? How is that
possible? #2- God gives you victory as you keep your word… Read Joshua 9:19-20 &10:6-9
All of these were issues Joshua faced if he kept his word
to the Gibeonites. He had given his word not to destroy them- but now to protect
them? Seems like a great opportunity to let someone else take care of what he
and Israel were supposed to have done in the first place. Why should Joshua
respond to this cry for help from the very people who had deceived him? Why not
just sit back and let the Canaanites fight among themselves? Joshua 10:8
Why did Joshua go to the aid of Gibeon?
Consider the following verses: Hebrews 13:6
What do you think this means?
Galatians 2:11-16
What in creation is going on here and why did Paul confront Peter like
this?
According to vs.12 what specifically was his motivation?
Peter was obeying certain religious laws only because he
was pressured to do so. The problem is that his example was leading people to
believe that you have to do these things in order to be right with God. That
called for a public confrontation. Peter quickly saw what he was doing wrong and
the damage that it was doing. He repented and quit giving into people pressures. Read Ephesians
4:25
What is the truth that is spelled out for us here?
It’s difficult for God to give you total victory when you
allow yourself to be pushed about by people pressures. After all you often
cannot keep your word to Him and people too. Jesus said, no one can serve two
masters (Matt.6:24). Joshua made a
treaty with people- but what was important to him is that it was made in the
presence of God (Joshua 9:19). God would give victory through Joshua keeping his
word not by avoiding conflict. #3- God gives victory by self control… Read Joshua 10:8-10
This is the great advantage the true man or woman of God
has. Read 1Timothy 1:7
What Spirit has been given to the believer?
Self control is the opposite of fear or the extreme which
is all out panic. Since both believers and unbelievers can be affected by fear-
it’s easy to see what happens to unbelievers who have no Spirit of self control.
With no control on fear it becomes panic. Read Joshua 10:42
Why were Joshua and Israel so incredibly victorious?
Read Joshua 10:11
What is one miraculous way God fought for the Israelites?
While the five opposing armies panicked, Joshua and the
army of Israel were calm and confident. Why? Because God was fighting for them-
they believed that.
Do you know that you are more than a conqueror? Or are you
a beaten, flimsy and fragile believer? Why is knowing so important? Read Acts 5:38-39
What did these religious leaders discover about true believers?
Read Galatians 5:22
Where does self control come from and how do you get it?
Get on the right program and grow the right fruit and God
will give you victory by self control… #4- God gives victory through prayerful planning… Read Joshua 10:16-19 Why do people hide? Fear… Sometimes you might think if you
had this or that were someone else then you would not deal with the fears that
you have now. Even Kings hide. Especially when they find out that no matter how
rich, powerful and popular you are- you are not outside of God’s sovereign plan. Quite a contrast isn’t it? These Kings leave their people
behind; in a panic they flee and hide in a cave. No thought, no preplanning and
certainly no prayer. Joshua’s actions however are as calculated as a super
computer. Every move is strategic and purposeful. Read Proverbs 9:10 Where did Joshua get His leadership
skill from?
Read James 1:5-8
and answer the following questions: What advantage does a believer have in life’s battle?
How does a believer get God’s wisdom?
In context, what do you think doubting looks like?
Believers in a personal relationship with God have the
availability of God’s continual wisdom for their lives. #5- God gives victory through Spiritual momentum… Read Joshua 10:19 This whole chapter speaks to spiritual momentum. What is
it? Spiritual momentum is moving when and where God is already moving. You
cannot create spiritual momentum- but you can capitalize on it by moving when
God is moving. Being ready to move when He is ready to move. I’m gonna guess
that this is where a good many believers and churches get stuck in mediocre.
Fear wins and they stay it safe. Read Joshua 10:19 again please…
What word or words stand out as powerful to the cause of taking the land
for God?
How about you? Do you have a good grasp on the fact that
God has called you to win the world for Jesus (Matt.28:18-19)? Or are you
un-happily complacent in fear and mediocrity? God gives victory through
Spiritual momentum… When you give all for God’s kingdom- it starts a spiritual
avalanche of good things that are possible. Read the following and note the examples of how Joshua
capitalized on the spiritual momentum of God moving? Joshua 10:12-14
Gutsy! Joshua 10: 24-25
Spiritual momentum was sustained because God was moving and
Joshua was on board to move with Him. How much spiritual momentum is stopped
dead due to your fears? Read Ephesians 5:15-17
What does this say about you and spiritual momentum?
God gives victory through Spiritual momentum… #6- God gives victory through perseverance… Read Joshua 10:29-39 Isn’t it amazing that Joshua kept going? He didn’t stop
giving orders to take more ground and His people didn’t stop accepting the call
to do so. That’s called perseverance. Without it Joshua would have quit and the
victory would not have been nearly as encompassing. The same is true for you and
I. Perseverance is an absolute requirement for total victory. Read Hebrews 12:1&2
And answer the following questions What race is He talking about?
What three things are required to finish the race God has
placed you in (Vs.1)?
Who is your #1 example of perseverance?
Jesus often talked of finishing the work that God had given
Him to do John 4:34 /5:36). Read James 1:2-3
How does perseverance grow in us (how do you learn to keep on keeping
on)?
The testing of your faith is designed to show you where you
really are in maturity as opposed to where you think you are (Deuteronomy 8:2 /
Luke 8:13). The purpose then is to give you room to grow to where you thought
you were… When the Israelites first left Egypt they believed they were very
mature in trusting God. What did God do? He tested them… They failed (Heb.3:8).
Yes, you can fail God’s testing. How? By rebelling against His testing.
Read 1 Corinthians 10:6-10
Name 4 ways we might rebel against God’s testing?
The Israelites were just like you and I. The only way they
might learn to trust God in all things was through perseverance. According to James 1:2-3, how important is perseverance in
your life as a believer?
God gives victory through perseverance… #7- God gives victory through personal devotion and
holiness… Read Joshua 10:8 & 12-13
Read the following and explain how and why- the way you
live- is key to your victory? James 5:16b
If prayer is key to victory (and it is central), then
righteous living is strategically important to victory. 1 John 3:21-22
It’s easy to get a conscience that is cauterized so that
you don’t even feel a twinge when things are not right (1Tim.4:2). The other
side of that coin is this; a person who continually chooses to personal devotion
and holiness will become very sensitive to God’s leading.
Psalm 34:15
Again, a person who is right with God (Rom.3:22) has God’s
full attention in prayer and in daily life. He is on your side!
I love that! Why would anyone fake religiousness? Fear! 1John 5:3-5
As long as we live in fear, we won’t experience victory.
God gives victory through personal devotion and holiness (Ecc.12:13; my
favorite)… Nuf said. |

Lesson 9 Joshua Chapter 9 The Enemy’s Strategy
Fear… More than anything FEAR is what keeps us from
everything that God has for us. His purpose, obedience and total love and joy in
our relationships. Even future blessings are adversely affected by our fears.
Future blessings such as ministry opportunities, better circumstances and
children who follow the Lord can evade us because of decisions made in the
shadows of present fears. We fear failure, we fear speaking up, being different,
not liked and acting assertively. All of which keep us stuck in a normal life. God has a plan and strategy for your victory. But there is
one who seeks with every fiber of who he is to derail you from God’s plan. His
name is Satan. His title is the devil. Jesus called Him the enemy of God, the
evil one, the thief and He prayed that believers would be delivered and
protected from him. God has a plan and Satan has a plan. Jesus said,
The thief comes only to steal and kill and
destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. John
10:10 In a nut shell Satan’s plan is to do anything and everything to ruin God’s
plan because His plan is for good. God’s plan for Israel was to depend and trust
in Him and take the land for Him and them. God’s plan for you and I is to depend
and trust in Him and take the world for Him (Matt.28:19 / Acts 1:8).
Common strategies… Read 2Corinthians 10:11
As a believer in Jesus Christ, why is it good to know Satan’s common
strategies?
It’s a step by step relationship with God… Read Joshua 9:1-2 What did all the Kings hear about? The victories of Israel,
that’s what! They were angry and afraid! They knew they didn’t stand a chance
against this force of God. And so what does vs.2 say they did?
This is one of Satan’s most common strategies. Get people
together- get them good and scared and get them thinking the same twisted way.
Like a lynch mob- a group of scared / angry people thinking they are right is
like putty in Satan’s hands! Read Matthew 24:28
What does this mean?
As believers- we should be very slow to jump on any band
wagon! Especially if it’s the express-way of someone’s downfall… Yuk! Read the following examples and see how common this
“numbers” strategy is… 1 Kings 18:22
What happened here and who would have seemed right?
Matthew 27:22-23
What happened here and who would have seemed right?
It appeared to the masses of people that Jesus had come out
against the Roman government and been arrested. It looked as if He was losing a
battle for takeover. People who sided with Jesus or even expressed His innocence
might very well be killed in the blood thirsty- crazy crowd.
Revelation 16:14 & 19:19
What happens here and who will seem right?
God’s word says that at this time
false messiahs and false
prophets will rise up and perform great miraculous signs and wonders so as to
deceive, if possible, even God’s chosen ones. Matthew 24:24
Read Joshua 9:3-15 Not everyone was so anxious to join the coalition to fight
Israel. The Gibeonites must have been convinced that they could never defeat
Israel in war so they considered ways to make peace (Joshua 9:9-10).
Gibeon was known as “an
important city” (10:2). It was the capital of a small confederation that
included at least three neighboring towns (see 9:17). The problem with making
peace was this; Israel wasn’t interested in peace. Peace wasn’t their purpose.
Peace wasn’t in their orders from headquarters. God had said,
“drive out the Canaanites, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and
Jebusites.” Exodus 33:2 Read Leviticus 20:23-24 / Deuteronomy 7:1-4
What was Israel’s commission and why were they to do it?
Read Matthew 10:34-39
What does Jesus say about this?
We often assume that Jesus came to bring us peace with
everyone. As if we are to compromise and have peace with everyone and everything
no matter what lines that crosses in priorities, God’s word and loving Him with
All I am… Not so. That, He says, is compromise for the sake of peace and
constitutes losing your life- not gaining it… Back to Israel… They couldn’t sign a peace treaty with
anyone inside the area that God had said was to be their land. Apparently these
crazy Gibeonites knew that little piece of info… So, what did they do? Resorted
to another of Satan’s common schemes. By the way, unbelievers don’t have many
options; you and I do. Read Joshua 9:4
What common scheme did resort to? (one or two words)
Deception
Lies deceit
Like so many deceptions, the agenda is so overpowering in
the minds of the deceivers that they spill it the moment the opportunity is
given. As soon as the Gibeonites found Joshua they told him,
We
have come from a distant country; make a treaty with us. Like little
kids who have cooked up a lie. Read Deuteronomy 20:15
Why the instant emphasis on being from a far country and all the effort
to ”prove“ it?
Apparently the Gibeonites had become aware of the Mosaic
Law permitting Israel to make peace with cities that were at a considerable
distance, but requiring them to wipe out completely the cities of the seven
nearby nations that would threaten their faith.
In defense of evil
scheming… Read Joshua 9:3, 4, 7 &12-27
So… Here’s what let’s do; let’s look at this portion of the
narrative and take this baby straight to application alley (that’s where the
rubber meets the road man). Five ways that Satan will try to take you out of God’s
plan… #1- Playing on your feelings… Read Joshua 9:4-6
Beside appearing as though they had come a long way, what emotions does
it seem they wanted to play on?
Read Mark 6:34
What was the emotion and the result of the emotion?
The difference between sympathy and compassion is action.
God Himself is described as compassionate (Ps.86:15). So when you are
compassionate it is because you are like God. Compassion is a God given emotion that generates God
directed results. Read Isaiah 54:8
How does God’s compassion for us differ from sympathetic emotions?
You may feel sorry for someone and just do what makes you
feel better- but when you have compassion for someone you do what is best and
what is needed. Often compassion keeps you from just making life easy for
someone. Why? Because sometimes that is not what’s best!
Read Joshua 9:10-11
What feeling might Satan be working on here?
Read Romans 16:17-18
What’s the lesson here?
Jesus said, “I do not accept praise from men.”
John 5:41 Accept is a word that means to absorb.
Absorbing the praise of people would have taken Jesus off God’s plan for
Him and turned Him on to fame, fortune and whatever else. Bottom line? Satan
will try to take you out of God’s plan by playing on your feelings… A great lesson is this: You will lose at life when you
begin acting on your feelings. Another way that Satan will try to take you out of God’s
plan is by getting you to ignore discernment. #2- Ignoring discernment…
Read Joshua 9:6-8
What do you see from Israel’s leaders in the initial meeting that’s seems
to get lost the more they converse with the Hivites (Gibeonites)?
Discernment is good Godly judgment. But isn’t judgment a
pretty awful sin? Yeah it is. But a blanket, “I shouldn’t judge” is a great way
to get into big trouble. Read the following and determine this: are there times when
you, as a believer are called to make judgments? Read 1 Corinthians 2:15
Read 1 Corinthians 6:1-2
After all weren’t Joshua and Israel’s leaders supposed to
judge the words of these Hivites? Sometimes good godly judgment is vitally
important. Often in leadership, we are called to protect the church by making a
difficult judgment (1Cor.5:2 / 2Tim.4:14-15). Consider North Park’s strategy
statement: “we will protect unity at all costs”. The question for each of us
should be this: what is the difference between good Godly judgment and bad
ungodly judgment? Read the following and determine what makes it wrong or
right to judge: Matthew 7:1-5
Matthew 18:15
There are a few really important criteria here; 1st-
has there really been a sin committed or have you just had a bruised nerve
stepped on? 2nd- If you are not willing to go talk to them your sin
is greater than theirs so shut up and grow up. 3rd- Don’t spread it
around. This is between you and it is not necessary for you gain a following. If
it is- you must not be very convinced of your own righteousness in this matter.
Furthermore if you go to others instead of the accused or in addition to the
accused- your sin just became greater and far more dangerous. This
behavior will cost you dearly and probably is. John 7:24
1Samuel 16:7
Discernment or good Godly judgment is often necessary in
the life of a believer. However it is absolutely always WRONG when that judgment
is merely the assumption of another’s motives or heart condition. However- Jesus
said, you will know a tree by its fruit. In other words, wait. And while you’re
waiting- consider this; what kind of fruit are you growing? Satan will try to take you out of God’s plan by getting you
to ignore your relationship with God. #3- Ignoring your relationship with God… You say duh… But are sure you recognize what it means to
ignore your relationship with God? Read Joshua 9:14
How did they ignore their relationship with God?
Examples? Read James 4:13-15
What do these verses have to say about your everyday decision making
process?
Read 1Corinthians 10:11
Why is Joshua 9:14 in your Bible?
Read Matthew 7:7
What does Jesus say to do?
Read Proverbs 3:5-6
In light of what we’ve read about Israel here in Joshua- what does this
verse say about the reason they didn’t ask God?
The evil one’s plan to derail you always includes pride. If
he can make me think the matter is small enough or I am smart enough- then he
has a chance. Satan will try to take you out of God’s plan through your
own impatience. #4- Impatience… I have been a “class A” target for this one! Impatience…
Moving before you ask God. Thinking you need to do it now. Letting the pressures
make your choice for you or push you to make a choice or take an action that has
no good reason to have to happen now. These are dangerous signs of impatience.
Dangerous because they will cost you… Read Joshua 9:16
What ridiculous thing happened three days after Israel decided to trust
the Gibeonites?
I cannot tell you how many times I’ve watched someone do
this. They might even ask my council, I say just wait. Next thing I know they
have done something. I guess they thought I meant wait until you feel like doing
something! Listen- you will live with the choice to move forward when you should
have waited- for a very LONG TIME. And don’t be further duped; it will not only
affect you; it will affect many. Read Isaiah 40:31
What is the promise here?
How about you? What are the pressures that make you decide,
choose or act without waiting on God or waiting all the way on God? I think of
the story of Herod in Mark 6. This was a guy who spoke to much, to quickly and
promised things only to impress others and all it did was cost him (and others). The final way that Satan will try to take you out of God’s
plan is by getting you to take matters into your own hands… #5- Revenge…
Read 2 Cor.2:10-11
What does this say concerning revenge?
Not unaware of his schemes has to do with un-forgiveness
which always has to do with revenge! (See also Hebrews 12:15 / note: bitterness makes you miss
the grace of God and defiles those around you) Read Joshua 9:15
What is this agreement called?
Why do you think Joshua felt he had to keep this agreement? Read Joshua 9:19
What did the leaders sight as the reason they would not change the
agreement?
Read Joshua 9:21-23
How did the leadership handle the situation? What good principles do you
see at work here?
When you have been deceived is your promise valid? Let’s say someone gets you into something that is illegal
or unethical – are you bound to your agreement when you find out? I would like you to get a-hold of another powerful thing
that took place because of this mistake. Read Joshua 9:26-27
What would the Gibeonites specifically supply water and wood for?
Joshua understood that the threat of having another people
nearby was that they worshiped other gods. The slavery that was their sentence-
would take the form of their being
woodcutters and water carriers for the altar of the Lord. In order to
keep the Gibeonites’ idolatry from defiling the religion of Israel their work
would be carried out in connection with the tabernacle where they would be
exposed to the worship of the one true God. The Israelites however remained
personally distanced from the Gibeonites. Read 2 Corinthians 6:14
What is God’s New Testament truth concerning our connections?
You will not bring them up- they will bring you down.
Recall the reason they were not to do this to begin with ( Exodus 34:15-16)?
It’s the devil’s scheme. Suck you into anything that keeps you or drags you away
from God. Jesus said, The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that
they may have life, and have it to the full. John 10:10 In a nut shell
Satan’s plan is to do anything and everything to ruin God’s plan because His
plan is for good. God’s plan for Israel was to depend and trust in Him and take
the land for Him and them. God’s plan for you and I is to depend and trust in
Him and take the world for Him (Matt.28:19 / Acts 1:8). |

Fear-lessLesson 8a Joshua 8:30-35 Fear… More than anything FEAR is what keeps us from everything that God has for us. His purpose, obedience and total love and joy in our relationships. Even future blessings are adversely affected by our fears. Future blessings such as ministry opportunities, better circumstances and children who follow the Lord can evade us because of decisions made in the shadows of present fears. We fear failure, we fear speaking up, being different, not liked and acting assertively. All of which keep us stuck in a normal life. Let’s do a quick recap… Nothing but victory chapters 1-6. Chapter 7 introduces Joshua and Israel’s first defeat. Remember? Achan and family had taken some valuable objects from Jericho that were devoted (set apart) for God… Israel, in the confidence of previous victories, went after the next city on the map (Ai) and took a powerful whipping. They were down and out like sauerkraut. The reason for the sudden loss was un-confessed sin, lack of dependence on God and a shortage of guts in holding one another accountable. The challenge in the aftermath was this: they were still God’s people charged with taking the land and carrying out His purpose. But- lets face it- it’s not easy to believe God and move forward after a beating; but to their spiritual credit- they did… And, in Chapter 8 after doing things God’s way, in total dependence on Him- they were victorious at Ai. Of course they were! But… a challenge still loomed in front of them… Here it is; ready? If success brings pride, self confidence and God’s opposition and failure brings sulking, self loathing and God’s discipline… well, let’s face it- that’s a no win future. There is fear in both! Stability- and better playground equipment… Read Joshua 8:30-35 Joshua and the Israelites needed to find a way to keep the course. To right their hearts no matter whether they were dealing with the threat of pride in victory or the anguish if discipline in defeat. But how? Well, a way was found by obeying a command that God had already given but they had thus far neglected. Read Deuteronomy 27:1-3&8 What were they commanded to do and when were they to do it? Keeping that in mind, let’s quickly examine what is meant by the term “the law”. Read Psalm 119:113-114 How do these verses explain the broader term “law”? Context and occasionally the original language are the only ways to determine what is meant when you run across the term “the law” in the Bible. The Hebrew word used in Joshua 8:30&32 is towrah {to-raw’} or torah {to-raw’} That’s no help at all. Torah simply means “law”. It could be any part of the first five books of the Bible. All we need to know for sure is that it was God’s word. Going back to Deuteronomy 27:1-3… I guess it doesn’t really say exactly when they were to do this exercise. Only that it was to happen once they had crossed the Jordan and were in the land. Regardless of the “when” question I think it’s safe to say they had put it off… It’s also safe to say that this recent rollercoaster brought back to mind what God had already said. Same old lesson… “I’m in a pickle and I don’t know what to do! I wish God would give me some direction.” What has God already told you to do? Read Joshua 1:7-8 What did God say directly to Joshua in relation to success? Funny how desperation seals up our loop holes… When you’re in deep water no one will ever hear you saying, “When do I have to get in the boat?” Who really cares about the “when” question when you are desperate? No one! Look now at the actual event… Read Joshua 8:31-32 What was done? It is not stated just how much of the law was written on the stones. Could have been the Ten Commandments or it might have been a good portion of the book of Deuteronomy. It seems quite intentional that we are not given this detail. Why? Because the specific portion of God’s word is not what is important here. What is? What is in view is that the way to stability is to get into the word of God. So it is in our lives… already we have the command that as believers in Jesus Christ we NEED to be in God’s word. Read the following verses and determine what promise is made concerning the world of God: Read 2Timothy 3:16 There is a lot of purpose and focus in those verses. Read 1 Peter 2:2 Psalm 119:11 Psalm 119:9 Psalm 119:105 In light of these promises about God’s word- how would staying in God’s word help Israel’s stability? When you are really sick from the seesaw of living on emotions like pride and sulking and the pounding of being a spiritual tetherball- loopholes don’t look so attractive- it’s more like just show me the way off this merry-go-round! God’s word is the way to stability. Stability- the prescription… Joshua 8:30-35 Does it matter where a person worships or what the altar is made from? Be careful how you answer… Does it matter how you use the medicine the doctor prescribes? Look again at Moses command and then the actual event; look at the locations. Deuteronomy 27:4 Where did Moses say to do this? Joshua 8:30 Where did Joshua actually do this? Sometimes the instability in our relationship with God comes from just one unnoticed thing: Rebellion. Not some hormone crazed teenager type rebellion- but the kind where we just say- God said to do this but this little change is good enough. You know He said a specific time, a specific person, a specific place- but you did something just a little different. His prescription- your adaptation. It’s the sick who need a doctor but often the sick do not do what the doctor orders (Mark 2:17). In John chapter 4 Jesus speaks to a Samaritan woman. She is sick and she has tried all kinds of things to fix her sickness. Read John 4:10-18 How did Jesus diagnose this woman’s sickness? The rest of the conversation is pretty revealing… Read John 4:19-20 What were the Samaritans lacking in their understanding of God? If they had known the word they would have seen plainly where they were to worship and there would be no question. Read John 4:22 How does Jesus confirm their lack of interest in God’s word in this verse? God’s word is central to the stability of every believer. And yet it is so over looked. I pray, that’s how I know God. I am spiritual, that’s how I know God. I might even go to church, that’s how I know God. Same with the Samaritan woman- but Jesus said she knew little about the God she prayed to and worshiped. Why? Because she did pay attention to the word of God. Like the guy to whom God revealed the hole on the dam. He said, “I would go get some cement but I happen to have chewing gum with me so I’ll just patch it with this”. When the dam broke he cried out to God, “why, why did you let this happen to me?” God said,” I showed you the problem, I tried to save you- but you were lazy. I showed you the hole, why didn’t you ask me how to fix it?” Now I don’t want you to get the idea that God is a legalistic stickler- He is not at all like that… But what God wants is your healing – He wants you to be whole, complete and useful. And guess what? He has the prescription for your stability just as He did for Israel. Read Joshua 8:31 what specific instruction for the construction of the altar are here? Stability comes from and through God. The fact that this was to be done without human workmanship is a powerful picture of the work of Jesus Christ. It is a statement of total dependence on God for salvation, growth and any future stability. Read Isaiah 44:12-20 Consider carefully what you just read. Have you ever fashioned your own god and worshiped it the way you wanted too? Human beings can add nothing to the work of God. His work and His word are complete. It is all by grace through the work of God in Christ. This becomes a strong reminder that: • We must recognize our sinfulness and come to God as sinners (Rom. 3:23). • We must come to the place of sacrifice, the cross, acknowledging our need for Jesus to die in our place. • We must throw out our human works for salvation: recognize there is nothing we can do or add to the work of God’s substitute for our sin, the person and work of Christ. The worship at Mount Ebal focused the people on the Word of God as that special revelation of God that was so crucial to their future well being as the people of God. The word pointed the people to those righteous statutes that would enable Israel to be a holy nation, a special redeemed people, a people of God’s own possession and a light to the nations (see Ex. 19:4-6; Deut. 4:1-8). Read 1 Peter 2:4-5 How are you and I likened to Israel here and what is happening to us? The worship on Mt Ebal pointed Israel to the holiness of God especially in comparison to man’s complete inability… This is the pathway to stability- for the word of God continually points us toward our inability and toward God’s ability. Toward who He is and who we are or are not... Toward His prescription for stability. |
